What is Debt on an energy meter?
Debt on an energy meter refers to an outstanding balance resulting from unpaid charges left by a previous occupant, often associated with prepayment meters.
This can happen if the outgoing resident used more energy than they paid for or did not top up the meter prior to leaving.
The debt remains on the meter until it is settled or reassigned by the energy supplier. If not addressed, any new occupant may inadvertently pay off this debt when they add credit, which is why it is essential to clear any existing balance before a new tenant moves in - preferably during the void period.
