Uncapping (Reinstating) Gas Supply - FAQ
-
What does “capped” mean under OVO?
It generally means a physical seal/obstruction has been fitted (e.g. in the Emergency Cut-Off Valve (ECV) or on the pipework) to stop gas flowing, not just turning off a valve.
-
Why might my gas supply be capped by OVO?
Safety issues: leaks, failed safety checks, risk identified via a smart meter or inspection.
Extended vacancy of a property.
Non-payment or credit issues (especially for pay-as-you-go).
Appliance or meter removal or parts of the system need repair.
-
How do I know if I need to contact OVO or the Gas Network / Gas Transporter?
If the cap is before the meter (on the inlet supply or ECV): contact your gas network operator / Gas Transporter. OVO cannot work on those parts.
If the cap is after the meter (on internal pipework): a Gas Safe-registered engineer can address this. OVO isn't responsible for internal pipework beyond the meter except arranging for repairs when needed under specific circumstances.
-
What are the steps to reinstate supply under OVO?
Identify where the cap/seal is.
Contact OVO (if meter side or upstream of meter) or the Gas Transporter if applicable.
If internal pipework or appliances are involved, use a Gas Safe engineer.
Safety checks must be done: tightness tests, leak checks, etc.
Once everything is safe, reinstatement can proceed.

Costs and charges
OVO charges for meter removal/disconnection and associated work. Example: £141 for meter removal job (includes physical disconnection, disposal, capping, final billing, and updating records) under current OVO schedule.
Internal work (appliances, pipework) is separate, often paid directly to the engineer.
Standing charges generally continue until supply is formally disconnected (meter removed or account closed appropriately). Capping alone usually doesn’t stop them.
-
Switching supplier when gas supply is capped
Yes, you can switch supplier even if gas supply is capped. The new supplier will take over, and standing charges may still apply until the supply is disconnected or meter removed.
-
Ending gas supply permanently
If you no longer plan to use gas (e.g. going fully electric, installing heat pumps), you can request gas supply disconnection + meter removal.
You’ll need to contact OVO to arrange this. Internal pipework removal is separate and usually your responsibility.

Customer support and practical considerations
If you're on OVO’s Priority Services Register (or qualify), mention it when arranging engineering visits or communications. OVO & the Gas Transporter may give extra help.
Sometimes engineers need access; failure to let them access may delay reinstatement.
After removing the meter, you can expect to be contacted by the Gas Transporter some months later to confirm whether you want supply restored or leave it disconnected.
