Why Helpthemove cannot instruct an energy switch at tenanted properties

Helpthemove cannot instruct an energy switch at tenanted properties

Helpthemove operates in accordance with Ofgem’s regulations governing energy supply transfers. It is illegal to switch the energy supply at a tenanted property without the consent of the registered account holder (the tenant). Any attempt to do so could result in regulatory action and fines.

Ofgem may issue penalties of £300 per property where an unlawful or unauthorised switch has been made.

To remain fully compliant with these regulations, Helpthemove does not and cannot instruct any energy supplier partner to switch the supply at any address where a tenancy is active.

Our agreement with our energy partners is managed through the energy partners Partnerships Operations Team. Under this agreement, Helpthemove provides client data exclusively for properties that are confirmed to be vacant.

This means:

  • Data submitted to energy suppliers through Helpthemove’s systems is limited to vacant properties only.

  • Our energy partners will only accept and act upon property data where the status is marked as vacant.

  • Neither Helpthemove nor our partner energy suppliers have the facility or authorisation to initiate a supply switch where the property is tenanted.

This process ensures that all actions taken by both parties remain within the scope of the partnership agreement and industry regulations.

Helpthemove’s technology and processes are designed to prevent non-compliant actions:

  • Our portal automatically restricts energy switch instructions to properties that are listed as tenanted.

  • If a property is marked as tenanted, the system will not send any switch instructions to any other energy supplier.

  • This safeguard ensures that energy supplies are only transferred when appropriate and lawful.

This compliance measure protects:

  • Landlords and agents, by ensuring they do not become liable for fines or legal breaches.

  • Tenants, by preventing unauthorised interference with their energy supply.

  • Helpthemove and our energy partners, by maintaining regulatory compliance and upholding ethical standards in energy management.
